Counselling & psychotherapy, meditation & expressive arts courses

in West Sussex, UK

Hi, I ‘m Amanda,

I am a qualified Humanistic Counsellor (MBACP) offering face to face psychotherapeutic counselling in Chichester, West Sussex and online for UK residents.

I am also a practicing artist and qualified meditation teacher offering meditation and expressive arts workshops and courses to groups and organisations.

I am a BACP registered Humanistic psychotherapeutic counsellor, qualified to work with adults, young people, and children face to face in Chichester, West Sussex and online for UK residents, for short or long-term therapy.

My practice is integrative and grounded in a person-centred approach, neurodiversity affirming, LGBTQIA+ ally and trauma informed.

As well as talking therapy, I am qualified to offer creative tools to help with exploring thoughts and feelings that are hard to express. Working with each client’s needs and developmental stage, I use sand tray therapy, paint, clay, pens, collage, music, games, meditation and more. These are supportive tools to express feelings through play and creative objects and images when words are not enough.

You may feel stuck, be having sleepless nights and increased anxiety or panic attacks with worries or concerns about a relationship, at home, at work, or in an educational setting. I understand that relationships affect many areas of life, whether in the past or present. You might have been holding onto a lot of hurt for a long time and even be feeling it is your fault, have physical symptoms such as digestive issues, migraines, or longer-term health issues and seek to avoid activities, people, or places.

Perhaps you have been told you are ‘too sensitive’, ‘too much’ or felt that people misunderstand or invalidate you, you may feel less confident. I can also work with people who are considering or who have had a recent diagnosis such as ADHD/Autism and seeking support through or beyond the assessment process.

For parents who are seeking counselling for their child, I can support your child to understand emotions and build on their self-esteem, for example through a divorce or separation or school issue, to work toward achieving greater self-confidence.

In counselling with me, I will listen without judgement to whatever you need to share, and will work at your pace, to make sense of it all. We can work together to create a space where you feel safe to explore your situation and how it is impacting your life. I can support you to understand your emotions, unravel any confusion, reduce anxiety, reconnect with yourself, and rebuild your self-esteem and confidence.

I value your individual experience and that your feelings are real, valid, and important. Your counselling sessions are an opportunity to express your voice, explore your thoughts, feelings, and choices. If you feel a need to be heard and supported in your relationships, counselling with me can help you to work out the best way forward for you.

I support adults and young people and children

to discover and create their new wings.

I aim to provide a sense of safety in a trauma-informed, grounded space for talking therapy and creative therapies
in my private practice in Chichester, West Sussex, in outdoor locations and online for UK residents.

If you are experiencing a challenging relationship

or have gone through tough times and traumas in the past,

I can help you to find your voice.

There can be different challenges at many life stages, causing us to feel overwhelmed and stressed
and in need of someone to listen with acceptance and warmth to our worries and anxieties.

I believe the therapeutic relationship can be deeply healing
and offer a safe space of trust so that you may feel seen and heard.
My approach is grounded in the person-centred therapy model.

Sometimes words are difficult to find, to express ourselves.
I also offer creative tools, alongside talking therapy, for all ages of clients,
to help with exploring thoughts and feelings beyond words,

either as short term counselling or longer term psychotherapy.

My aim is to empower you to develop a deeper self-awareness and confidence

to make the changes you seek in your daily life and relationships.

I also offer walk and talk, nature therapy in various outdoor locations for adults, which can be arranged if they suit your needs once therapy has started.

Face to Face Counselling

My therapy practice is grounded in the person-centred therapy model which means I encourage you to bring issues to the therapy sessions which are led by you.
My role as a person-centred counsellor is to support you to explore your feelings, behaviours, beliefs and world view, around the issues you wish to address, so that you grow in self-awareness toward a greater independence.
As your therapist, I aim to help you to build your self-confidence and understand that you always have options. You are the expert of your own life and noone knows what it is like to walk in your shoes, through the experiences you have had. My goal is to help you to see what resources and support are within you and around you, so that you have your inner toolbox, once therapy comes to an end.
I will not judge you, no matter what you bring to your therapy sessions. It is important to build a sense of trust in the therapy work and to create a space where you feel safe and free to express whatever is troubling you. The overall aim is that you will discover your autonomy and abilities that help you to cope with present and future problems.
For longer term therapy, I support clients who wish to address underlying reasons for current issues which may come from the past, from childhood or traumas. I also recognise that traumas can come through generational lines and not just be within our own lived experiences. The aim is to unravel patterns and responses that may be further out of reach, within the body and subconscious and to bring these into conscious awareness, within the safety of a held space. The use of expressive arts can support this process of uncovering that which may feel too difficult to put into words or emotions that are unsafe to feel. With a person-centred approach to this work, I aim to provide an accepting and grounded space for your process, at your pace.

Online Counselling

I can offer online counselling sessions if you are unable to attend face to face, such as due to your specific needs or childcare issues.

I use Whereby as the platform.

Therapy sessions held over this online space can be just as safe and a trusting relationship can be developed, as in face to face sessions.

There are some details to attend to such as making sure you are in a private space and will not be disturbed and we can make sure that noone else is able to enter the online room.

I work in the same way online as I do face to face and can also use some creative tools online. It is also possible to plan both face to face and online sessions, within your allocated time, over the period of your therapy.

Nature Therapy for adults

Being in nature has positive benefits to the therapeutic process. Nature is healing. It can give us a sense of connection.
We can feel a sense of freedom and rejuvenation in an outdoor space. Walking in nature whilst talking can be less intense or intimidating and help you to relax more, which in turn can help you to explore your feelings.

Sometimes it is also beneficial to use your senses in an outdoor space and to relate your to the natural sights and sounds
of the walking experience.

As a trained walk and talk therapist, I am able to support you to connect to the environment and to your inner
feelings.

Sometimes, a guided meditation can support this experience and as a qualified meditation teacher, I am able to draw upon
different types of meditation to help you to find what works for you.

I have a few locations within the Chichester area that I use for walk and talk therapy. At first, we begin with some face to
face sessions before venturing outdoors.

Expressive arts and sand tray therapy for all ages
For when words are not enough …
I also offer expressive arts in the therapy sessions.
Exploring your issues through image and symbols, using tools such as clay, paint, collage, journaling, poetry, story, sound help to support you to express your inner thoughts and emotions whilst gaining self-awareness in a non-threatening way.
You don’t have to be an artist to express your feelings through these mediums and may find that after some initial discomfort at the playful nature of using creative tools, new perspectives can be gained from your creations. Some peope find their perspective has changed from thinking they were ‘not creative’ to becoming inspired to include a creative outlet or approach in their everyday lives.

Meditation and expressive arts . . .

There are many benefits of meditation and expressive arts to mental health and wellbeing.
When we engage in a creative activity or meditation we can slow down our thinking enough to be able to be present with our inner self.
A creative or expressive art activity need not be a long process and you do not need to be an artist to create.
Starting with a journal, a simple way to begin a creative practice could be to doodle and write whatever flows onto the page for ten minutes every morning or evening.
Combining this with a ten minute guided meditation, is a great way to begin a regular practice that can have many health benefits to you and if started during a calm period of time, can be of great support when life takes a more challenging turn.
Meditation is not just about sitting still in the lotus position and emptying your mind and you don’t have to be spiritual or follow a guru to learn how to meditate.
You can be your own guru after learning some basic techniques in your own space or within a supportive meditation group.
Meditation can be done anywhere and there are different ways to meditate such as enjoying guided visualisations, focusing on the breath and incorporating movement such as walking meditations and it can be done at any time
such as in the shower, on a walk, whilst cooking dinner or waiting for the kettle to boil.
Meditation is about noticing.
It is a way of being in the here and now moment.
It supports development of an inner awareness to your breath, body, thoughts and responses and can support your self-healing journey by finding different types and styles of meditation that suit your individual needs.
Meditation can…
– reduce stress & anxiety & stress hormones
– increase circulation
– reduce blood pressure
– reduce pain
– increase wellbeing & happy hormones
Creating time for meditation and a creative activity can reduce stress, anxiety and depression
and increase wellbeing by boosting confidence and self esteem, and increase overall immune system function.
